長月の雨音

水曜日は雨だった。朝は少し薄日が差していたように思ったが、昼が近づくにつれ、空は雨雲に覆われた。そしてまもなく雨が降ってきた。

風はなく、雨音だけが聞こえる。よく聞くと、やさしい音をしていた。やわらかく瑞々しい音。雨粒は夏のそれとは違い小粒で耳に心地よい音だった。好きな雨だった。

叩きつけるような暴力的な雨ではなく、渇いて生気が衰えたものをやさしく励ますような雨。雨音に癒される思いがした。

科学的には秋雨前線が云々なのかもしれないが、そんなことはどうでもよかった。夏の陽射しに照らされ続け、疲れた木々の葉に雨粒が当たり、雨音はその木々の葉が喜んでいるように聞こえてくる。だから耳に心地よく、穏やかな気分になるのか、と一人腑に落ちてみたりする。

ふと小説を読みたい衝動に駆られた。紙の匂いと長月の雨音は相性がいい。微かに香る雨の匂いは、あたかも一輪の花のような見えない彩りを添えた。

夕刻が迫るにつれ、雨は止んでいった。もう少し降っていてほしかったが、この自然の気まぐれを受け入れるしかない。受け入れた時、この日の雨がもたらした心情への影響は大きかったと気づく。
