読み手と【字切り】

一般に【字切り】という単語は耳慣れない言葉だと思う。広告制作の現場ではよく言われる言葉なので、業界用語と言ってもいいかもしれない。

何かというと、例えば次のようなコピーがあるとする。

かわいい子には旅をさせろ、それは生きていく知
恵を育むことを願う親心だ。少年よ、旅に出よう。

インターネットの世界ではこういう感じではないだろうか。しかし、紙媒体に掲載するとなれば、これではいけない。紙媒体に掲載する時は、

かわいい子には旅をさせろ、それは生きていく知恵を
育むことを願う親心だ。少年よ、旅に出よう。

となる。言っていることはまったく変わっていない。違うのは『知恵を育む』の部分を『知恵を』で敢えて改行し、『育む』を二行目から書いてあるかどうかの違いだけだ。意識的に改行されている後者のほうが、読み心地としてはよくなっていると思う。

読み手になるべくストレスを与えずに読んでもらうために、意識的に改行することを、

【字切り】

という。インターネットの世界では、この【字切り】を考慮していない。それは恐らく、端末によって見え方が違ってしまい、こうした【字切り】の意味がなくなってしまうからだろうと思う。そのため、インターネットでは時々おかしな終わり方が散見される。

例えば、

来年の東京オリンピックのマラソンは北海道の札幌に急に決まった。

最後の「た。」が勝手に改行されて字余りのような終わり方になってしまうというものだ。

紙媒体であれば、グラフィックデザイナーがそれぞれの文字と文字の間を調整して、一行に収まるようにする。

この文章で言えば『オリンピック』や『マラソン』という各文字の文字と文字の間は『北海道の札幌に急に』よりも余裕がある。

特に、

オリンピック

の『リ』と『ン』や『ッ』と『ク』の間は余裕がある。そこの文字間を詰めて『た。』だけが改行されないようにする。それでも難しい時は、

マラソン

の『ラ』『ソ』『ン』の間を詰めるなどで対応する。

広告制作の現場では、こうした地味な作業をおこなっている。常に読み手がより読みやすいように、また、全体のデザインのバランスを崩さないように、である。

電車の中吊り広告は、この【字切り】が駆使されているので、時々そういう視点で眺めてみると、窮屈＆退屈な通勤通学の電車内がちょっとだけ楽しくなるかもしれない。
